General Info

OpenBabel is pretty easy as it respects the InstallShield /s switch.

Process

  1. Download the latest version of OpenBabel from the Downloads page above and place the executable in C:\temp\openbabel.
  2. Create a batch file with the following contents named “Install-OpenBabel.cmd” in your source directory.
    @ECHO OFF
    ECHO Installing OpenBabel 2.3
    ECHO Do not close this window. It will close when the install is finished.

    REM Main Install
    OpenBabel2.3.0a_Windows_Installer.exe /S

    REM Shortcuts
    IF NOT EXIST "%allusersprofile%\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Chemistry Applications\" MKDIR "%allusersprofile%\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Chemistry Applications\"
    move "%allusersprofile%\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\OpenBabel 2.3.0\Open Babel GUI.lnk" "%allusersprofile%\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Chemistry Applications\"
    rmdir /s /q "%allusersprofile%\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\OpenBabel 2.3.0"
  3. Assemble the files into a single source folder then create a SCCM package and program. The program’s command line action should be “install-OpenBabel.cmd”. The following is a screen shot of my final source folder:
